"You sure you'll be OK?" Jacob asked me. I tucked my hair behind my ear and looked down, biting my lip. It was a trait I had inherited from my mother.
"I'll be fine, yeah." I inhaled through my nose and exhaled out my mouth. The stress breathe. "I'm just nervous, that's all." Stress breathe. Jacob could read my emotions.
"Look, Ness, if you want to stay with me today, it's totally O.K, you can." he told me, grabbing my shoulders in the most gentle way. "I'll take you home right now," Jacob said, taking his hand off of me to motion to his truck. He had me. He knew that. But I _needed_ to do this.
"I want to. Believe me, I do."
"i know."
"So...I'll just try it today."
He nodded. We kissed for a second, and then he left, reluctantly and said goodbye. I was going to miss him.
He looked a bit pained and sad when he drove away. He drives so carefully. On a night where my father was in a bad mood, he complained to my mother about how Jacob's careful driving annoyed him. She was told that he has only obeyed driving laws to ensure my safety by keeping himself alive to protect me. They got in a big fight about how he didn't approve of how close we were. This is where l broke in. I put my palm on his cheek, showing him all of the good times Jacob and l had together. He softened immediately, and my mother held me tight while I sobbed. She didn't glare at Dad like I wanted her to. Nobody understood what Jacob meant tome, and I thought Dad of all people should know. I was fifteen.
As I recall this memory, I forget my surroundings and walk into a person. She turns around. She had been talking to her friend and stopped abruptly when she saw me. "Hi," she said. "I'm Jamie Baker."
"Hi, I'm Renesmee Cullen." I said coolly and confidently. I have to be careful, though. I completely understand vampire rules, and I know I have to keep low-profile here.
Her smile faded to a frown. "Oh. A Cullen, huh? I've never seen you before."
"I was home-schooled," I lied smoothly. "I switched when I got bored. Seven hours of school is really tedious without friends."
"I'll bet," Jamie replied. "Hey, you should come sit with me and my friends today. We'll help you get familiar."
Dad zoomed from behind Jamie's friend and shook his head: _no way you're sitting with a human._
_Dad!_ I thought. _Just leave me alone! I'm trying to meet friends! I wouldn't have been born if you hadn't tried to make friends with Mom._
And then he left.
Jamie noticed my eyes in the direction of her friend. "That's Bryn. She's my best friend."
I closed my eyes. "Anyways, sorry, I have to sit with my...the...Cullens."
"Gotcha." Jamie said with a wink, a little bit sad that I "had" to sit with the Cullens. But I have Jacob.
Then I remembered. "What exactly did you mean when you were talking about the Cullens?"
"Oh, that." Jamie said. "I didn't mean--"
Bryn cut in. "They're just...a little weird. They don't talk to anyone, don't react, they're _really_ smart, and...they're just weird. That kid Jasper, he seems like he's in pain, and Alice is too jumpy, Emmett looks like he wants to physically kill the whole school; he's so big, and Rosalie, well, you you can tell that she thinks she's above everyone."
Jamie nudged Bryn.
I laughed. These were the same descriptions that people had used throughout my whole life. I could overhear my family laughing about what people thought of them when I was younger."No, Bryn, it's O.K. I just want to know what people are saying about us. Go on, Brian. What about Edward and Bella?"
"Hmm...Edward and Bella are obviously in love. They spend every moment staring into each other's eyes. But if a teacher asks them a question to see if they were paying attention, they answer it correctly. It's weird. But you...are different."
"How am I different?"
"I don't know. You talk to people. Unlike their annoying way of knowing absolutely everything, you just seem to know."
I turned to Jamie and Bryn. "I must go. The bell is going to ring soon. It was nice to meet you though." and I left.
High school was going to be fun. The first four years, anyway. I don't know if I can handle centuries. Until I die.
