"Get out of here!" I said to Alec.
"I am sorry, upon Aro's orders I must remain for two whole months to learn about you, Renesmee."
"I couldn't possibly care less. For what you guys almost did to my family--"
"_Almost,_ let us not forget."
"Whatever. I'm sorry you had to see me like this. But I don't want you here." Okay, that was cruel. But I never liked the Volturi. Sure, as a young girl I tried to be nice to them, but it was so hard since I knew what they wanted. But I would never let my parents or Aunt Alice leave. Surely I would have to come with them, and I am happy with the vegetarian lifestyle I live.
As soon as school was over, I rushed outside with my homework and scanned the parking lot for Jacob. He wasn't there. It finally caught me by surprise when I saw Jacob's truck gliding up the lot. A smile burned across my face. Jacob! What a relief! As the window rolled down, to my surprise, it was Leah. "Leah? What are you doing here?"
"Hey, Nessie," Leah said.
"Hi, Leah. Where's Jacob?"
"I thought you might ask that. He's hunting."
Oh shoot! I hadn't hunted with Jacob in a week! Because of the glass of blood yesterday morning, it had allowed me to be around humans and not get thirsty. I had inherited yet another strong trait from my mother: thirst control. It never crossed my mind to go hunting again, what with everything that's been going on. "Oops! I totally forgot! Tell him I'm sorry."
"You don't have to worry about that. He'd forgive you if you killed him." She said bitterly. She had always wanted to imprint. It wasn't fair to have to listen to Jacob while they were wolves thinking about me all of the time.
"Oy! Renesmee! Could you spare a bit of your time so we could talk, if you please?" A voice behind me said. It was Alec. I groaned.
"Sorry, Leah, I'll have to--" I stopped. Leah had turned off the truck and was gaping at Alec. "Leah," I started, "I have to go talk to Alec."
"Alec." she repeated, in a daze. I finally understood what happened.
Leah had imprinted.
On Alec.
A vampire.
Not just any vampire...
...one of the Volturi.
