I don't know how it happened.
I was just sitting there, in Geometry, thinking about how wonderful Jacob is, when I noticed him.
Alec. He had sort of become my friend. I had helped him because, well, I wanted nothing to do with the Volturi if they had to come here because Alec and Jane failed their mission.
I sat next to him in class, I helped him understand his homework (he had a very old-fashioned speaking style), and I talked to him. He always wanted to be around me. When he wasn't busy deciding whether or not to kill me, he was a pretty nice person. He asked about me, what I thought and certain opinions I had, and always made sure he was on my team in Gym when we played sports. I don't know how he did it, I just know he did.
But anyways, I had been looking at him, and he smiled at me. I did one of those _Who, me?_ things where you turn around, then back around and point to yourself questioningly. That's when it happened.
That's when I stopped thinking of Alec as just a friend.
After class, we talked. Him in his British accent and stuff. Just from listening to how others talked, as a vampire he picked up the modern language pretty well. He said something to make me laugh, and I touched his arm, threw back my head, and laughed.
I know I don't think of him the way I think of Jacob.
What I do know is that I don't think of him as just "Alec."
Then at the end of the day, feeling fazed, I walked out to meet Jacob. I didn't know what was happening to me, but in a second, Jacob was talking to my father.
Jacob got out of the car. I didn't see what happened next. I remember my head hitting Jacob's muscular, beautiful hands, and everything went black.

At dinner that night, A.K.A, hunting with Jacob, he said something that startled me.
"Nessie, what do you think of Alec?"
I stopped. "I...think he's a good man for Leah. He seems nice and perfectly...nice." Since when was I bad at lying?
Jacob sighed. I knew he was disappointed. "Look, Jacob, I'm sorry. I can't lie to you."
And I told him everything. When I got to the part about loving Jacob and _liking_ Alec, he looked reassured. "I'm so sorry, Jacob. Like I said, I'll love you more than life until I die. Just kidding, I'll love you even after I die."
That's when Jacob got angry. "NESSIE! DON'T YOU _EVER_ TALK ABOUT DYING AGAIN!" It startled me. I started to cry out of shock. "No, no, no, Nessie, I'm so sorry! It just makes me sick to my stomach thinking about you, dead. I love you."
I was still crying. I was so sorry. I owe Jacob so much, and here I am, liking another boy. I cried harder.
"Nessie, I swear. I love you so much. I shouldn't have yelled at you. Listen, if you want this boy, I would let you have him, if you love him more than you do me. But you'll have to get past Leah first."
I stopped crying. "I love you more, Jacob. But I...have to go." I _had_ to go. I couldn't live with myself right now.
"Nessie!" I heard him shout.
"I love you, Jacob!" was all I said as I ran.
